Round 400 B.C.: Celts appear in the surroundings
1st cent. A.D.: Romans are settled down during the Pannonian provincial period
1009: King Stephen The Saint (I) mentions the name Copus (Kapos) in a deed of foundation
1061: the Hungarian palatine Atha takes an establishment of a Benedictine monastery in Szentjakab, at the present place of the ruins
1192: another deed issued by King Béla III mentions the settlement again
In the 13th century the noble family Rupuli constructs a fortress in the riverine swamps under the name Újvár (New Castle)
1273: a county council takes place in Kaposvár
1372: a meeting is organized by the palatine in the castle
1555: the Ottoman army occupies the fortress and the Benedictine monastery
1686: re-occupation of the fortress from the muslims
1690: Kaposvár with all its 120 inhabitants becomes the property of Prince Eszterházy
1703: Kaposvár gets market holding rights
1712: the reconstruction of the town is started: the Eszterházy family supports people settling down in the town
1715: the first official General Assembly of the county
1749: Kaposvár becomes the county seat
1810: the foundation of the first four-class secondary school
1866: the first issue of the weekly magazine Somogy appears
1872: the railway line Dombóvár and Zákány is inaugurated
1873: Kaposvár becomes a town with corporate rights
1894: the foundation of the Sugar Factory
1912: the Town Aesthetics Association is founded
1929: Kaposvár becomes a town with county rank
1942: the town becomes a municipal borough
1950-1975: the period of industrial development and the raise of the population up to 73.000 inhabitants
1950 and 1973: firstly the village Kaposszentjakab, then Toponár, Kaposfüred and Töröcske join to the local government of Kaposvár
1st December 1990: Kaposvár is announced a town of county rank again
16th July 1993: Kaposvár becomes an episcopal seat of the Roman Catholic Church
November 1995: the village Taszár nearby Kaposvár becomes the military headquarter of NATO-IFOR
1st January 2000: the foundation of the Kaposvár University - Kaposvár is one of the nine Hungarian university towns

- Construction of the "Klebersberg Kuno" dormitory
- Renovation of the Rákóczi Stadium
- Civilian aviation terminal - Taszár
- Construction of municipal flats and a 60-flat Old People's Home in Kecelhegy.
- Completion of the bypass section of the clearway N 61
- Two industrial parks of Kaposvár are full, new investments started in the industrial area bordered by Izzó Street and Raktár Street
